What it costs compared with roaming
Roaming is usually the most expensive way to call the US from abroad. Large US carriers charge $1 to $3 per minute pay as you go, or about $12 per day for a travel pass, however short the call.

Area codes outside the United States
The country code +1 is also shared by Canada and many Caribbean countries, such as Jamaica (876), the Bahamas (242) and the Dominican Republic (809, 829, 849). A number that looks American may be priced differently, so check the rate shown before you call.
Toll-free and premium numbers
US toll-free numbers begin with 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844 or 833. Many carriers can't connect to them from outside the US, but you can call them from 002call. Enter them like any other US number.
Avoid 900 numbers
Numbers that begin with 900 are pay-per-call lines with a higher charge on top of the normal rate. Check the price before you call one.
Find numbers for Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citibank, Capital One, American Express, the IRS, USCIS, Social Security, United, Delta, AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.
Common mistakes
- Entering 011 or 00 first. The dialer handles the international part. Start with
+1. - Dropping the area code. All 10 digits are needed after
+1. - Calling back an unknown missed call. Especially from a Caribbean area code. The US Federal Trade Commission warns about one-ring scams with high callback charges.
- Trusting a number in a message or email. Caller ID can be faked. Use the number on your card or the official website.
Emergency numbers
911 (emergencies), 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) and 311 (non-emergency city services) are short codes that work from a phone inside the US, not from abroad.
Do not rely on 002call for emergencies
Internet calls can fail when power or the connection is lost, and emergency services may not know where you are. In an emergency, use your phone and the emergency number for the country you are in.
US citizens abroad can find help in our posts on the US State Department and the US Embassy.
When to call
The US spans six main time zones, so check the local time of the line you are calling. The cards below show the current time in each.
US clocks change on 8 March and 1 November 2026, often on different dates from your country, so the time difference can shift by an hour for a few weeks. Offices are usually closed on federal holidays.
Call quality
A browser call needs a steady connection more than a fast one, using roughly half a megabyte to one megabyte of data per minute (an estimate).
- Use Wi-Fi or a good mobile signal.
- Use headphones to avoid echo.
- Switch off a VPN if the audio is choppy or one-way.
- Check the microphone permission if the other person can't hear you.
