Which number to use

SBI. SBI's NRI contact page lists +91 80 2659 9990 under India, marked "(chargeable)". The page gives no hours for it. Its 1800 numbers are also listed under India, and the page does not say they work from abroad, so they are not in the table.

HDFC. HDFC's page lists +91 22 6000 6000 under "Other Countries" with the note that local charges may apply from other countries, so check with your service provider.

ICICI. ICICI's page lists +91 40 3099 8025 as a global, non-toll-free number, with "*Charges Apply" in the footer. The same page says NRI customer care is available "24/7 from Anywhere". Its 1800 numbers are listed for NRIs in India, and the page does not say whether they work from abroad.

Before you call

  • Have your customer ID and account number ready. That way you can answer the first questions without delay.
  • Check the number on the bank's NRI page first. Use the bank's own page rather than an old saved number.
  • Dial the number in the format the page shows. SBI's page says not to add the country code when dialling its international toll-free numbers. Its chargeable +91 line is listed with the code.

Toll-free lines in other countries

SBI lists toll-free numbers for several countries, including the USA, UK and UAE. HDFC lists toll-free numbers for Kenya, the USA, Canada and Singapore. These are not Indian numbers, so the India rate does not apply to them. Check the bank's NRI page for the line that matches the country you are calling from.
