Contacting HMRC and UK Banks from Overseas

Calls to HMRC Self Assessment or Barclays personal banking from abroad cost $0.02 / minute from 002call. The overseas numbers and hours for each line are listed below.

Call from your browser
ServiceNumberHours (timezone not stated)Cost
HMRC Self Assessment general enquiries+44 161 931 9070Mon–Fri, 8am–6pm, closed bank holidays$0.02 / minute
Barclays personal and Premier customers, from abroad+44 2476 842 099Mon–Fri, 8am–8pm$0.02 / minute

The 002call rate for both numbers is $0.02 / min.

Check the hours against your own clock before you call, since neither HMRC nor Barclays states a time zone for these lines.

Calls from mobiles, public phones and hotel rooms may attract extra charges. GOV.UK advises checking with your phone provider for the actual cost, particularly when you are calling from abroad.

HMRC Self Assessment: the most common overseas call

Most people calling HMRC from abroad want help with a Self Assessment return, a payment or a notice. HMRC's Self Assessment contact page lists +44 161 931 9070 as the number for callers outside the UK. The UK number on the same page is +44 300 200 3310, so use the outside-UK number from abroad. The line is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and is closed on bank holidays.

Here is the sequence to follow:

  1. Check the day and time. Call on a weekday between 8am and 6pm, and not on a bank holiday. Check the hours against your own clock first.
  2. Use the outside-UK number. Dial +44 161 931 9070 from abroad.
  3. Have your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) with you. HMRC's online technical support page asks callers to have their UTR to hand, so keep it ready for any Self Assessment question.
  4. Check the cost before you dial. GOV.UK recommends checking the actual call cost with your phone provider, particularly from abroad.
  5. Pick the right line. HMRC runs a separate online technical support line for sign-in and form problems. It has its own outside-UK number, listed on its GOV.UK page. Use that page's number for sign-in problems.

Barclays from abroad

Barclays' customer services page lists +44 2476 842 099 as the number to call from abroad for personal and Premier customers. Its lines are open 8am to 8pm, Monday to Friday. The same page says Barclays is available 24/7 for digital self-servicing, which means the app and online banking.

Two things to know before you call. The Barclays page gives no Saturday hours for this number. A separate Barclays telephone banking page gives Saturday hours for a different number, and those do not apply to the number above.

If the problem is a balance question or a routine change, the app or online banking may be quicker than a call.

What to have ready before you call

  • A one-sentence reason for calling. Say what you need, for example "I need to confirm a payment reference," so the first answer is useful.
  • Your UTR for any HMRC Self Assessment call, as described above.
  • Your account and card details for a Barclays call, if the question concerns a particular account or card.
  • Paper and a pen. Note the name of the person you speak to and any reference number they give you.
  • The date and time. Check the hours before you dial, and allow for the difference from your own clock.

Frequently asked questions

Can I call from a mobile?

Your phone provider may add charges on top of the 002call rate, so check its rate before you dial. GOV.UK says the actual cost depends on your provider, so the figure on your bill may differ from the rate shown here.

What if the line is closed?

HMRC's Self Assessment general line is closed outside Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and on bank holidays. Barclays' personal line is listed as open Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm. For self-service, Barclays' contact page says its app and online banking are available 24/7.

Do I need the UK 0300 number?

No. From abroad, use the outside-UK number on the GOV.UK page, +44 161 931 9070 for Self Assessment general enquiries. The +44 300 200 3310 number is the one listed for UK callers.

Breakdown of Providers

Calls to the UK from overseas can cost more than you expect, depending on how you dial:

  • Carrier roaming: $0.50 - $2.00 / min, depending on the carrier, plus monthly and hidden charges.
  • Hotel room phones: a hotel landline can add administrative markups on top of the standard call rate.
  • 002call: $0.02 / min, with the rate shown before you dial.

Why 002call is the smart way to call

002call sends the call over the internet from your browser, so it skips the international call charges that a carrier or hotel phone adds. You pay one flat rate of $0.02 / min, with no subscription, and on Wi-Fi the call uses no mobile data.
