Calling the IRS from Overseas: Numbers and Hours
Calling the IRS from abroad costs $0.02 / minute from 002call. Dial +1 267 941 1000, the line the IRS gives for international callers and overseas taxpayers, and check the hours and what to have ready below.
Call from your browserTax account questions from overseas
For a question about your tax account, call the IRS International Taxpayer Service line. The IRS gives its hours in Eastern time.
| Number | Hours | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| +1 267 941 1000 | Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time | $0.02 / minute |
- Work out the Eastern time where you are. The line is open Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time (U.S. and Canada). Check the time difference before you dial.
- Have your name and Social Security number ready. The IRS says it needs both to resolve any tax account issue.
- Expect to pay for the call. The IRS says this line is not toll-free, so your phone or carrier charges apply.
Identity verification letters from overseas
If the IRS sent you a letter asking you to verify your identity, keep it with you before you call. The Taxpayer Advocate says Letter 5447C provides phone and mail options for international taxpayers.
| Number | Hours | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| +1 267 941 1000 | Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time | $0.02 / minute |
- Check the letter for the options it lists. The Taxpayer Advocate says that if you live outside the U.S., you should call +1 267 941 1000.
- Use the IRS online service if your letter allows it. The IRS says the online service is only for people who received a CP5071 series notice or Letter 5447C. Have the notice on hand. If you filed a return, have the Form 1040 series return for the year on the letter.
- Sign in or create an IRS account. The IRS says you must sign in or create an account, then answer a few questions. New users set up an IRS online account and verify their identity through ID.me, according to the Taxpayer Advocate.
