Contacting the Italian Tax Agency from Overseas
Need to reach the Agenzia delle Entrate, Italy's tax agency, from outside Italy? Here is the number for overseas callers, the hours an operator answers, and what a call costs from 002call.
Call from your browser| Service | Number | Hours (timezone not stated) | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tax assistance by phone, for callers outside Italy | +39 06 45470468 | Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm, excluding national holidays | $0.02 / minute |
The 002call rate for the number above is $0.02 / min.
Calls from mobiles, public phones and hotel rooms may attract extra charges, so check your rates before dialling.
Dial the overseas number, not the toll-free one
The agency lists 800 90 96 96 as a toll-free number for Italian landlines. From overseas, its contact page gives 0039 06 45470468 as the number to dial, so use that one.
The overseas number changed on 22 April 2024. Older guides that list 06 96 66 89 33 for callers abroad are out of date.
Who pays for the call
The agency's page says the cost of a call from a mobile or from abroad is charged to the caller, according to the caller's own carrier plan. Your carrier bills that call, so check the plan before you dial.
Hours and holidays
Operators answer Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. The agency's page says operators are not available on national holidays, so a call on a holiday will not reach one.
Outside operator hours, an automated answering service picks up. The page says its automated telephone services run 24 hours a day. That statement covers the automated services, not the operator line in the table.
The agency gives these hours without naming a time zone. If you are far from Italy, work out the Italian local time before you dial rather than assuming it matches yours.
Best times to call
The operator line is open five working days a week. Weekends and Italian national holidays are the times to avoid, so check the holiday calendar before you plan the call. If you call from a time zone many hours away from Italy, the working day may already be over when you dial.
What to have ready
This is general advice, not an agency requirement. Write down your question in one sentence before you dial, and have your codice fiscale and any notice or reference number to hand. Every minute on the line is billed to you, so a clear question keeps the call short.
Before you dial
- Confirm the overseas number, +39 06 45470468, on the agency's contact page.
- Check your carrier's international rate, or the 002call rate shown before you connect.
- Pick a working weekday that is not an Italian national holiday.
- Keep the question and your reference number in front of you.
Questions people ask
Can I call from my mobile?
Yes. The agency's page says the cost of a mobile or foreign call is charged to the caller according to their carrier's plan. The 002call rate for the number above is $0.02 / min.
What if the line is closed?
Outside operator hours, the automated service answers. On national holidays operators are not available, so plan the call for a working day.
Does the toll-free number work from abroad?
The 800 90 96 96 number is listed as toll-free from Italian landlines. For callers outside Italy, use 0039 06 45470468.
002call sends your call over the internet, so it skips the international call charges your carrier and hotel phone would add. There is no subscription, and you pay only for the minutes you use. If you are abroad, Wi-Fi avoids mobile data charges.

Breakdown of Providers
Calls to Italy from overseas can cost more than you expect, depending on how you dial:
- Carrier roaming: $0.50 - $2.00 / min, depending on the carrier, plus monthly and hidden charges.
- Hotel room phones: a hotel landline can add administrative markups on top of the standard call rate.
- 002call: $0.02 / min, and you see the rate before you dial.
Why 002call is the smart way to call
At $0.02 / min, a 20-minute hold costs $0.40. A roaming plan or a hotel phone can cost more for the same call, depending on your carrier or hotel, so check those before you dial. 002call lets you start the call from your browser with the rate shown up front, so you know what the call will cost before it connects.
