Contacting Chase and the IRS from Overseas

Need to reach Chase or the IRS from abroad? Chase's fraud and unauthorised-charges line and the IRS line for overseas taxpayers are both US numbers, and each costs $0.02 / minute from 002call.

Calls from mobiles, public phones and hotel rooms may attract extra charges, so check your rates before dialling.

Chase: unauthorised charges and account security

Chase's fraud page lists +1 713 262 3300 for calls from outside the US. It is the number for unauthorised charges and compromised accounts on personal checking and savings accounts and debit cards. Chase says it accepts operator relay calls on this line.

Credit cards use a different number. Chase lists +1 800 955 9060, option 2, for personal and Sapphire credit cards, and does not give an outside-US number for them. If your problem is a credit card, check the number printed on the back of the card before you dial the 713 line.

Chase also advises that when you are not sure a request is genuine, you should contact Chase before you share account information or send money. Use the number on the back of your card or on your statement to do this, not a number a caller or message gives you.

Report online first

Chase's fraud page links to a step-by-step report for unauthorised transactions on debit and credit cards. You can start there from your browser without a call, and call only if the report does not resolve the problem.

IRS: international taxpayers

The IRS lists +1 267 941 1000 for international callers and overseas taxpayers. The IRS says this number is not toll-free. It is for tax account issues, and the IRS says it will need your name and Social Security number to resolve them.

The IRS's 800 numbers are listed for individuals, for business callers, and for callers in Guam, the Bahamas, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. From abroad, use the 267 number.

Overseas taxpayers can also fax a tax question to +1 681 247 3101. The IRS says this fax line is for international tax account issues only.

For general questions, the IRS's Interactive Tax Assistant and its frequently asked questions on international individual tax matters are available online.

Hours and time zones

Both lines use Eastern Time. Chase's personal line is open Monday to Friday, 8am to midnight, and Saturday and Sunday, 9am to 6pm. The IRS international call centre is open Monday to Friday, 6am to 11pm, Eastern time. The IRS lists no weekend hours.

Eastern Time is behind UTC, by five hours in winter and four hours when daylight saving applies. Convert both sets of hours to your own time zone before you call. The Chase weekend window is shorter, so if you can wait, call on a weekday.

Before you call

These are general steps for any call, not a guarantee of how long a line will take to answer.

  • Chase: the card or account number involved, and the dates, amounts and merchant names of the transactions you are asking about.
  • IRS: your name and Social Security number, which the IRS says it needs to resolve a tax account issue.

Have these ready so the call is short. International calls add up while you wait on hold.

002call sends your call over the internet, so it skips the international call charges your carrier and hotel phone would add. There is no subscription, and you pay only for the minutes you use. If you are abroad, Wi-Fi avoids mobile data charges.

Breakdown of Providers

Calls to the US from overseas can cost more than expected, depending on how you dial:

  • Carrier roaming: $0.50 - $2.00 / min, depending on the carrier, plus monthly and hidden charges.
  • Hotel room phones: a hotel landline can add administrative markups on top of the standard call rate.
  • 002call: calls to US numbers cost $0.02 per minute. You see the rate before you dial.

Why 002call is the smart way to call

At $0.02 a minute, a 20-minute hold on either the Chase or the IRS line costs $0.40. The same hold on a roaming plan or a hotel phone can cost noticeably more. 002call lets you start the call from your browser with the rate shown up front.

Frequently asked questions

Is the IRS line toll-free?

No. The IRS lists +1 267 941 1000 as not toll-free. For written questions about an international tax account, you can fax +1 681 247 3101 instead.

Does the Chase line cover my credit card?

Not as listed. The 713 number is for personal checking, savings and debit cards. For credit cards, Chase lists +1 800 955 9060, option 2, and does not list an outside-US number, so check the back of your card before you dial.

Will the IRS ask for my Social Security number?

For a tax account issue, yes. The IRS says it needs your name and Social Security number to resolve the issue. Have them ready before you dial.

002call charges $0.02 / min for calls to US numbers, which covers both numbers above. It is worth keeping as a backup for any call to a US bank or government line from abroad.
