Federal Student Aid Information Center

The Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) is the main line for federal student aid questions. It is a toll-free number, and its hours are published in Eastern Time.

NumberHours (Eastern Time)Cost
+1 800 433 3243Monday 8am to 9pm; Tuesday and Wednesday 8am to 8pm; Thursday and Friday 8am to 6pm. Closed Saturday, Sunday and federal holidays.Rate shown before you dial
  1. Convert the hours to your local time. Eastern Time is often several hours from where you are, so check the open hours before you dial.
  2. Dial +1 800 433 3243. The same number is printed as 1-800-4-FED-AID on Federal Student Aid's own pages.
  3. Plan around the closing times. The line closes earliest on Thursday and Friday, at 6pm Eastern. Monday is the only weekday open until 9pm.

Weekends and federal holidays

The line is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays, so a call on those days will not reach the FSAIC. Federal Student Aid publishes this closure on its own partner pages. Plan a call for a weekday during the hours above.

Calls from a mobile, public phone or hotel room

Calls from a mobile phone, a public telephone or a hotel room may attract additional charges. Those charges are set by your phone or hotel, not by Federal Student Aid or 002call.

Rates and what to expect

For US numbers in the rate table, the rate is $0.02 / min.

002call sends your call over the internet, so it skips the international call charges your carrier and hotel phone would add. There is no subscription, and you pay only for the minutes you use. If you are abroad, Wi-Fi avoids mobile data charges.

Before you call

  • Have the loan or grant you are asking about to hand, with the details you need to discuss.
  • Choose a weekday call time in Eastern Time, and note the closing time for that day.
  • Have a pen and paper ready to note the name of the person you speak to and any reference number.

Breakdown of Providers

Calls to a US number from overseas can cost more than expected.

  • Carrier roaming: $0.50 - $2.00 / min, depending on the carrier, plus monthly and hidden charges.
  • Hotel room phones: hotels often add their own markup to international calls.
  • 002call: US numbers in the rate table are $0.02 / min.

Why 002call is the smart way to call

On a 20-minute hold, the US rate of $0.02 / min comes to $0.40 through 002call. Roaming and hotel phones can cost more for the same wait, and their charges depend on your plan or hotel. Use 002call to call Federal Student Aid and see the rate for this line before you dial.
