How to Call a 1300 Number From Overseas

You're overseas and need to call your Australian bank, the ATO, or a utility. The number on their website starts with 1300 or 13. You dial it, and nothing happens.

That's normal. Most 1300, 13 and 1800 numbers only work from inside Australia. The fix is to call the company's overseas number instead, which starts with +61. You can call that from your browser with 002call.

Why 1300 and 13 numbers don't work from overseas

1300 and 13 numbers are Australian "local rate" numbers. 1800 numbers are free to call. Both only exist inside Australia's phone network.

  • They have no international format. There's no reliable way to put +61 in front of a 1300 number and reach it from abroad.
  • Your foreign carrier won't route them. Most overseas networks don't connect calls to these numbers.
  • The company sets it up that way. Many only answer 1300 lines from Australian callers.

What to call instead

Almost every big Australian company and agency has an overseas number. It's a normal Sydney or Melbourne number, written like +61 2 … or +61 3 ….

Look for "calling from overseas" on the company's contact page. Or use one of these, from our service number guides:

OrganisationOverseas numberGuide
Commonwealth Bank+61 2 9999 3283CBA from overseas
ANZ (lost or stolen card)+61 3 8699 6955ANZ from overseas
NAB+61 3 8641 9121NAB from overseas
St.George+61 2 9155 7800St.George from overseas
Australian Taxation Office+61 2 6216 1111ATO from overseas

Each guide lists the line's hours and what it's for. Check them before you call, as some lines are only open on Australian business days.

How to call the +61 number

  1. Open the web dialer and create an account.
  2. Enter the number in full, starting with +61. Drop the leading 0 from the area code, so (02) 9999 3283 becomes +61 2 9999 3283.
  3. Check the rate. Calls to Australian landlines cost $0.02 a minute.
  4. Press call. Wi-Fi is enough, so you don't pay roaming.

Mind the time difference

Many lines follow Sydney or Melbourne business hours. Check the time in Australia before you call, especially when you're in Europe or the Americas.
