Call Toll-Free Numbers From Abroad
You're abroad, your card has been blocked, and the number on the back starts with 1-800. You dial it and get silence, or a recording saying the number can't be reached. This page explains why that happens and how to get through from your browser with 002call.
Why toll-free numbers fail from abroad
A toll-free number is free for you because the company pays for the call. Most companies only pay for calls from inside their own country. So when your call comes from a foreign phone network, it is often refused before it reaches anyone.
- Your carrier may not route it. Many mobile networks outside the US don't connect calls to US toll-free numbers at all.
- The company may block it. Some toll-free lines only accept calls from inside the country.
- It may not be free anyway. When a toll-free number does connect from abroad, your carrier can still bill it as an international call, plus roaming.
How to call one from your browser
002call places your call through its own phone carrier, over the internet. Your foreign SIM and roaming aren't part of the call. Many toll-free numbers that refuse a foreign SIM connect this way.
- Open the web dialer and sign in. Nothing to install.
- Add credits. Pay as you go, with no subscription.
- Enter the number with its country code, for example
+1 800and the rest of the number for a US 1-800 line. - Check the rate. It is shown before you call.
- Place the call. Wi-Fi is enough, so you don't use mobile data.
Not every toll-free number connects
Some companies only accept calls from inside their own country, whatever service you use. If a number won't connect, look on the company's website for an international number. It's usually a normal number with a country code, and it's often listed under "calling from outside the US" or similar.
Toll-free formats by country
Enter toll-free numbers in full international format. Drop the leading 0 from UK numbers.
| Country | Toll-free prefixes | How to enter it |
|---|---|---|
| United States and Canada | 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, 888 | +1 800 123 4567 |
| United Kingdom | 0800, 0808 | +44 800 123 4567 |
| Australia | 1800 | +61 1800 123 456 |
The digits after the prefix above are placeholders. Australian 1800 numbers are often blocked from overseas, so check the company's website for a +61 alternative first.

These are real toll-free lines from our service number guides. Each guide also lists the company's international number, in case the toll-free one won't connect.
Frequently asked questions
Is the call free? Not from 002call. The company pays its side, but you pay 002call per minute for the call. The rate is shown before you dial, and you're billed only for the minutes you use.
Do I need a US phone number? No. You call from your browser with your 002call account. You don't need a SIM or a number of your own.
What if I'm put on hold for a long time? Keep the browser tab open and your laptop plugged in. On a phone, stay on Wi-Fi so a long hold doesn't use your mobile data.
Why not just call the company's international number? If it's listed, that's a good option too, and you can call it from 002call the same way. Many companies only publish a toll-free number, or staff the toll-free line for longer hours.
