Microphone not working in Zoom, Google Meet, Teams or Discord?

If the test above works, your mic is fine. The app is probably using a different mic, or it’s muted there.

Zoom

In the Zoom app, open Settings > Audio, choose your mic and press Test Mic. If you join Zoom in a browser, allow the mic in the browser as shown above.

Google Meet

Meet runs in your browser, so if this test works in the same browser, Meet can use your mic too. Pick the same mic on the preview screen before you join, or in More options > Settings > Audio during a call.

Microsoft Teams

Open Settings > Devices, choose your mic under Audio devices and press Make a test call.

Discord

Open User Settings > Voice & Video, choose your mic as the Input Device and press Let’s Check. If your voice cuts out, turn off automatic input sensitivity and lower the slider.

Fix your mic on your computer, phone or headset

Windows 10 and 11

Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone (Settings > Privacy > Microphone on Windows 10). Turn on Microphone access and Let desktop apps access your microphone. Then choose your mic and check its volume in Settings > System > Sound, under Input.

Mac

Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and turn on your browser. Then choose your mic in System Settings > Sound > Input.

iPhone

For Safari, open Settings > Apps > Safari > Microphone and choose Ask or Allow (on iOS 17 and earlier it’s Settings > Safari). For Chrome, open Settings > Apps > Chrome and turn on Microphone. Then reload this page.

Android

In Chrome, tap ⋮ > Settings > Site settings > Microphone and allow it. Also check Settings > Apps > Chrome > Permissions > Microphone on your phone.

AirPods and Bluetooth earbuds

Connect them first, then choose them in the mic list in the test. On Windows, the mic often shows as a separate Headset or Hands-Free entry. On iPhone, Settings > Bluetooth > ⓘ next to your AirPods > Microphone sets which AirPod picks up your voice.

Wired and USB headsets

Check the mute switch on the cable or ear cup and push the plug all the way in. A laptop with one combined audio jack needs a plug with three black rings for the mic to work. Then choose the headset in the mic list in the test.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test my microphone?

Press Test my microphone and allow access when your browser asks. Speak, and the volume bars move when your mic picks you up. To hear how you sound to others, press Record, say a few words, press Stop, then press Play.

Is my audio uploaded or saved?

No. The test runs entirely in your browser. Your recording stays on your device and is gone when you leave the page.

Why can’t the test hear me?

Usually the mic is muted, the wrong mic is chosen, or your computer or phone doesn’t let the browser use it. Another app that’s already using the mic can also block it. The test shows what to try for each case.

Can I test my webcam and microphone together?

Yes. Press Test my camera under the microphone test to see your webcam picture while your mic test runs.

Can I call a phone number from my browser?

Yes. 002Call lets you call landlines and mobiles in 190+ countries from your browser, with no app or SIM card. You pay per minute only after the call is answered.
