What is an online call?
An online call starts in your browser and connects to the regular phone network. You speak through your computer's or phone's microphone, and the call rings on the other person's mobile or landline like any other call.
That's the difference from a messaging app voice call. Messaging app calls are free, but they only reach people who have the same app and an internet connection. An online call reaches any phone number, including banks, airlines, hotels, government offices, and relatives who don't use a smartphone.
Why call from your browser
- No app to install. It works in the browser you already use, on a computer or a phone.
- Reach any number. Call mobiles, landlines, and business lines, not just app users.
- Nothing for the other person to set up. They answer on their normal phone.
- No subscription. You buy credits when you need them, and they never expire.
- See the cost first. The rate for the number shows before you place the call.
When it's useful
- Calling a bank or card issuer from abroad. Many banks have an overseas support line, and our service number guides list the numbers.
- Avoiding roaming charges. Call over hotel or café Wi-Fi instead of your mobile plan.
- Calling family on a landline. Reach relatives who don't use messaging apps.
- Working with people abroad. Call clients, suppliers, or a recruiter's office on their regular number.
- Calling when your SIM doesn't work. If your phone has no signal or no service abroad, you can still call from a laptop on Wi-Fi.
How to make a call online
- Open the web dialer in your browser.
- Create an account. Your free test call is ready to use.
- Enter the number with its country code, such as
+1for the US or+44for the UK. See the dialing guides for each country's format. - Check the rate shown for that number.
- Press call and allow the browser to use your microphone.
- Add credits when you want to keep calling. You're billed from the moment the call is answered, in whole minutes.
If a call doesn't work
- The call won't connect. Check the number has the right country code and no extra leading zero. Most countries drop the zero after the country code.
- The other person can't hear you. Your browser may have blocked the microphone. Allow microphone access for the site and try again.
- The sound is choppy. Move closer to your Wi-Fi router, or close other tabs and apps that are using the connection.
- A toll-free number won't connect. Many toll-free numbers only work inside their own country. Look for the company's overseas number instead.
Tips for a clear call
- Use headphones with a microphone to stop echo.
- Use a stable Wi-Fi connection rather than a weak mobile signal.
- Keep your browser up to date.
- Use the free test call to check your microphone and speakers before an important call.
