EE Roaming Charges: What It Costs to Call Home, and a Cheaper Way
EE charges by the day to use your plan abroad: £2.72 a day in Europe and £6 to £8 a day in most of the rest of the world. Without a pass, calls outside Europe cost £2.46 a minute. How EE counts a day
- In Europe, the Daily EU Charge covers a UK calendar day, midnight to midnight UK time.
- Outside Europe, a 24-hour pass runs for 24 hours from the moment you buy it.
- Without a pass outside Europe, you pay £2.46 a minute for calls you make and calls you answer, and listening to voicemail is charged at the same rate.
A 20-minute call home from the US without a pass costs £49.20. On 002call, the same call to a UK landline costs about $0.40.
How to call home without roaming charges
- Switch on airplane mode, then turn Wi-Fi back on. Your EE SIM stays off the local network, so no daily charge or per-minute rate applies.
- Connect to Wi-Fi at your hotel, a café or your rental.
- Open the 002call web dialer in your browser and sign in. There's nothing to install.
- Enter the number with
+44and drop the leading 0, so07700 900123becomes+44 7700 900123. - Place the call. The rate is shown before you dial, and you pay only for the minutes you use.
Answering calls on your EE number costs money outside Europe
Without a pass, EE charges £2.46 a minute to receive a call outside Europe. In Europe, answering or making a call can trigger the £2.72 Daily EU Charge. Keep airplane mode on and call people back from your browser.
When a pass is still worth it
EE's passes also cover mobile data, which 002call doesn't. A pass can make sense on days when you need maps or messaging away from Wi-Fi. In Europe the £2.72 daily charge is low, so if you need data there, it may be simplest to pay it. Outside Europe, a local SIM or travel eSIM for data is usually cheaper, and you can still call the UK from your browser over it.
