IRD Contact Number: Call Inland Revenue From Abroad

Moved away from New Zealand with a tax or student loan question still open? Inland Revenue runs separate +64 lines for overseas callers, listed below, and calls start from $0.02 / minute with 002call.

IRD numbers for overseas callers

Inland Revenue's 0800 numbers are for callers inside New Zealand and usually can't be reached from abroad. From overseas, use the +64 line for your topic:

# / LineNumberCost
1. Personal tax+64 4 832 5223$0.02 / minute
2. Business tax+64 4 832 5205$0.02 / minute
3. Student loans+64 4 832 5242$0.02 / minute
4. KiwiSaver+64 4 832 5228$0.02 / minute
5. Child support+64 4 832 5209$0.02 / minute

All five are Wellington numbers, so from 002call they cost the same flat rate wherever you are calling from.

Calling hours in New Zealand time

Inland Revenue publishes its hours in New Zealand time only, Monday to Friday:

  • Tax and KiwiSaver lines: 8am to 6pm
  • Student loans: 6:15am to 6pm
  • Child support: 8am to 5pm

New Zealand is ahead of Europe and the Americas. For callers in the UK or the US, the Monday morning opening in New Zealand falls on Sunday where you are, and Friday's close comes early on Friday morning there. The student loan line opens earlier than the others, at 6:15am New Zealand time.

Free lines in some countries

Inland Revenue also runs toll-free numbers for people living in a few countries. They are free when dialled from a phone inside that country. If you are travelling, or your carrier won't connect them, you can dial them through 002call at the rate shown.

These lines keep the same New Zealand hours as the +64 numbers above.

Student loans from overseas

For borrowers based overseas, the student loan contact page gives +64 4 832 5242 for the rest of the world, with separate free lines for Australia and the UK in the table above.

Inland Revenue's page on living overseas with a student loan says overseas-based borrowers need to make minimum repayments or apply for a temporary repayment suspension. The key date it lists is 31 March, when an overseas-based repayment is due if you don't have a suspension. A call before that date gives you time to sort out a suspension or a payment plan.

KiwiSaver after you move

Inland Revenue's KiwiSaver line for overseas callers is +64 4 832 5228. For taking money out, though, the call usually goes to your KiwiSaver provider, not Inland Revenue. Its page on moving overseas says:

  • If you move permanently to Australia, you can transfer your savings to an Australian super scheme, but you don't have to.
  • After 1 year living overseas (not in Australia), you can take most of your savings out. The government contributions stay in.

Call Inland Revenue for questions about your KiwiSaver account details or contributions, and your provider for a withdrawal or transfer.

When you don't need to call

Many tasks are quicker in myIR, Inland Revenue's online account. Its contact page asks people to send a secure message from myIR rather than email, since that keeps personal details safe. A message also works around the time difference, because you can send it whenever suits you.

Before you call

Inland Revenue's self-service page says to have your IRD number handy when you call. Also have ready:

  • Your myIR login, in case the agent asks you to check something online
  • Your current overseas address and phone number
  • Recent letters from Inland Revenue, with any reference numbers
  • For student loans, the date you left New Zealand and your repayment history

Some phone options use Voice ID, so call from a quiet place if you have set it up.

Rates and charges

From 002call, every +64 line listed here is $0.02 / min. The free lines in Australia, the UK, the US and Canada are also $0.02 / min, and the Hong Kong line is $0.06 / min.

Calls from mobiles, public phones and hotel rooms may attract extra charges.

Breakdown of Providers

Calling New Zealand from abroad can cost more than expected, especially if you are on hold for a while.

  • Carrier roaming: $0.50 - $2.00 / min, depending on the carrier, plus monthly and hidden charges.
  • Hotel room phones: hotels add their own administrative markup to international calls.
  • 002call: $0.02 / min to any of the +64 Inland Revenue lines.

Why 002call is the smart way to call

002call places the call over the internet from your browser, so a carrier or hotel adds no international call charges. You pay one flat rate per minute with no subscription, and on Wi-Fi the call uses no mobile data. A 45-minute call to the student loan line costs $0.90.
