How to Call China from Your Browser: Country Code +86, Dialing Format and Costs

To call China from 002call, open the web dialer, enter +86 and the number, and press call. Pay as you go from $0.748 / min, no subscriptions.

Chinese number format

Every Chinese number is +86 followed by the number without its leading 0. Mobiles have 11 digits and start with 1. The Xs below are placeholders.

+86

Country code

1XX

Mobile prefix

XXXX

Next four digits

XXXX

Last four digits

Landlines use an area code followed by a local number. Beijing (10) and Shanghai (21) have two-digit area codes, and most other cities have three. Drop the area code's leading 0 as well: Beijing 010 becomes +86 10.

Step by step

  1. Open the web dialer and sign in.
  2. Add credits. You pay as you go, and your credit never expires.
  3. Enter the number as +86 and the digits after it.
  4. Check the rate. It is shown before you call.
  5. Place the call. You are billed from the moment it is answered, in whole minutes.

What it costs

We could not confirm published per-minute rates for calling China from abroad on the three main Chinese carriers' own websites, so we don't compare them here. Check your own carrier's international rates before you call.

Calls that don't connect

Calls from outside China to Chinese numbers are sometimes blocked. Carriers that handle these calls report that they fail more often when they are:

  • short, averaging less than about three minutes
  • repeated to the same number within an hour
  • unanswered in high volumes
  • made with a spoofed or invalid caller ID

Delivery is not guaranteed, so if a call fails, wait a few minutes and try again.

When to call

China uses one time zone, Beijing time, which is UTC+8 all year. It does not change its clocks.

Call quality

A browser call needs a steady connection more than a fast one, using roughly half a megabyte to one megabyte of data per minute (an estimate).

  • Use Wi-Fi or a good mobile signal.
  • Use headphones to avoid echo.
  • Switch off a VPN if the audio is choppy or one-way.
  • Check the microphone permission if the other person can't hear you.
